Grand Challenges Workshop Series

Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) is sponsoring a series of workshops on Grand Challenges in Science.

  • The climate workshop, "Challenges in Climate Change Science and the Role of Computing at the Extreme Scale," chaired by Dr. Warren Washington, was held November 6-7, 2008 in the Washington, DC area.

  • The high-energy physics workshop, "Scientific Challenges for Understanding the Quantum Universe and the Role of Computing at Extreme Scale," chaired by Dr. Roger Blandford with co-chairs Dr. Norman Christ and Dr. Young-Kee Kim, was held December 9-11, 2008 at SLAC—the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

  • The nuclear physics workshop, "Forefront Questions in Nuclear Science and the Role of High Performance Computing," chaired by Dr. Glenn Young with co-chairs Dr. David Dean and Dr. Martin Savage, was held January 26-28, 2009 in the Washington, DC area.
In the planning stages for spring 2009 are workshops on nuclear energy,   fusion science, and biology. The materials science workshop is slated for summer 2009.
Reports from the workshops are posted on the ASCR website:
